The CSX River Subdivision

Haworth NJ to Closter NJ (1 of 2)

Q439 approaches the Ivy Avenue Bridge in Haworth on June 30, 2009.

With Haworth, Closter, Harrington Park, Norwood and Northvale, we are deep into the leafy suburbs of northern Bergen County New Jersey, just below the New York State line. The tracks run almost entirely through residential neighborhoods of single-family houses.

Until recently, Haworth boasted a quaint, wooden, single-lane bridge over the tracks at Ivy Avenue, but several years ago that bridge was taken down and replaced with a modern (but still single-lane) bridge. The view of the tracks from the bridge remains the highlight of this section of the River Sub. Just bring a small ladder to see over the low metal fence.

Closter offers views at two road crossings, Durie Avenue and Old Hook Road.

Getting there: To reach Haworth and Closter, follow Washington Avenue north from Dumont as it twists east and becomes Schraalenburgh Road. Left turns (west) into Haworth Avenue, Durie Avenue, and Old Hook Road will bring you to the tracks. The single-lane bridge over the tracks at Ivy Avenue is a block south of Haworth Avenue.
