In August 2006 work began on a controlled siding, to run from new CP43 (QR42.98) just north of Mine Dock Road in Fort Montgomery to new CP45 (QR45.11), about a quarter of a mile north of Rose Drive in Highland Falls. At the same time, many signals along the way were relocated or updated. Iona Island was the staging area for the project, and got its own signal, an approach signal for CP 43, at Mile QR40.98. Here's a look at the project from leveling the ground to the first train on the new siding.

At CP 43

Above and Two Below: On August 21, 2006, the ground is being leveled at mile 43 in Fort Montgomery.

In leveling the ground, the workmen pushed a high mound of dirt against the northwest face of the
rock cut just north of Mine Dock Road, providing a new photo vantage point above grade.
From that vantage point, we watch local train C712 southbound on September 12, 2006.

Elements of the new control point began arriving in October:

3 photos below: concrete ties and track; the control cabin; and the foundation for the north signal gantry.

Above and Below: On October 30, 2006, the new south end signal arrived.

Below: On October 31, the signal is seen in place (but not, as it turns out, its final place).

Above: Q271 rolls through the work zone on November 6, 2006, seen from
Metro-North's Manitou station on the east side of the Hudson River.

Above and Three Below: On November 10, 2006, workers prepare the switching track for cutting in at CP 43.

Above : On November 17, the switching track has been cut in.
Below: Q150 passes by the switch on the same day.

Below: On December 4, 2006, the signal gantry for southbound trains is in the process of being erected.

Below: Work continues on the cantilever as Q118 passes by on the same day.
