"It's getting ugly," the dispatcher told the crew of unit empty coal train E473 on the afternoon of May 7, 2007, as they finished picking up empty coal cars on the Tomkins Cove coal siding and headed for the West Haverstraw Yard to drop a "cripple." Q433, Q439, and Q254 were all sitting waiting, stretched out for miles on the main track north of Tomkins Cove and the double track in Fort Montgomery.

Above: Unusual sight -- E473 would normally
drop these empty hoppers on the controlled siding, and
continue light to the West Haverstraw Yard at CP 33 to reverse onto the main
track and run around
the train. But here, E473 took the whole train down the main track to the West
Haverstraw Yard.

Above and Below: E473 arrives in the West Haverstraw Yard.

Below: E473 waits as Q433 rolls by on the controlled siding.

Above & Below: E473, having uncoupled the
defective car from the cars behind it, pulls the front of the train
with the defective car south and then reverses onto one of the yard sidings.

Above: This wide view shows Q439 now appearing in the yard, stopped on the controlled siding, alongside the E473 train sitting on the main track north of the Railroad Avenue crossing. In the foreground, the defective car (second from rear) is being shoved north onto the yard siding. All tracks are under the control of the E473 crew.

Above & Two
Below: The rear car is set out, and the engines move south across Railroad
Avenue.
The defective car will next be set out on the easternmost siding.

Three Below: The defective car is set out and the engines pull south off the easternmost siding.
