On the weekend of July 18 and 19, 2009, the spectacular Duchess County Balloon Festival was held in Poughkeepsie, NY. At dawn on Sunday morning, a mass launch of hot air balloons took place on the east shore of the Hudson River. The backdrop for the event was the abandoned  Poughkeepsie Railroad bridge, in the final stages of construction for its new life as a walkway across the river. On the west side of the Hudson, early morning River Sub trains headed north and south through Highland as balloons rose over the river.

Above & 3 Below: At 6:12 on Sunday morning, the crew of Q271, the first daylight train of the day,
must have gotten quite a surprise as they looked out over the river.

Above & 2 Below: At 6:38, a southbound intermodal train rumbled down the slope
from West Park, through CP 76, and glided along the river, with balloons
overhead in all directions.

Below: By the time this northbound stack train appeared at the base of the bridge at 7:39, not a
balloon was to be seen in the sky. It was as if the morning's events had never happened.

In 2010, the July 4th celebration came early on the River Line, as balloons rose over Highland Landing at 6 a.m. Sunday morning at the annual Dutchess County Balloon Festival in Poughkeepsie.
