Popularized countrywide in the Billy Joel song, "New York State of Mind," Metro-North's scenic commuter railroad, the Hudson Line, runs north from New York City's Grand Central Station and into the Bronx along the East River. It then swings around to the east shore of the Hudson River at Spyten Dyval, above the northern tip of Manhattan, following the route of the New York Central's old Water Level Line north to Croton-Harmon and on to Poughkeepsie. Amtrak trains from Pennsylvania Station coming up the west side of Manhattan cross the Spyten Dyval Creek, where they meet the Hudson Line, and  continue north to Albany, Niagra Falls, and Canada. CSX freight trains roam the Hudson Line, mostly during the night, and cross the river at Albany to the Selkirk Yard. Canadian Pacific freights polish the rails from Fresh Pond, Queens, to Saratoga Springs, New York.

The last of Amtrak's 3 turbo jet trains in operation on the Empire Service
roars south through the falling snow in Tarrytown, NY, in February, 2001,
shortly before being removed from service for major renovation.

North- and south-bound Amtrak trains meet at Bear Mountain, May 19, 2005.

Below: By 2001, the FL9 fleet was relegated almost exclusively to shuttle service on spur lines. Here, a two-car shuttle plies the Harlem Line extension from Brewster North to Wassaic on February 2, 2001.

By 2006, the FL9's were rarely seen even on the spur lines. The last F unit in revenue service anywhere on Metro-North was in February 2009. Thereafter, the CDOT Fs were in mothballs and the Metro-North Fs were being sold to scrappers.

Ardsley-on-Hudson Station on its way to Saratoga Springs, July 25, 2003.
The train enters the Hudson Line after the evening rush  hour,
and can be seen in daylight only in the long days of summer.
